(New Delhi, India, 21-28th of February)

We flew from Phnom Penh to New Delhi and checked in to our hotel in Chowdy Chok, a modern hotel but situated  a bit “off the grid”. Even if the hotel was fancy the only dinner options were the hotels restaurant or the shabby places down at the metro station.

(Siem Reap, Cambodia, 15-20th of February)

Siem Reap is not really a small town as it has 1 million citizens, but it feels like a tiny place. It is filled with low buildings and a lot of tiny alleys and nice restaurants. We had booked 3 nights to start with in a really nice hotel called the Sleeping Angkor. Our room was huge and the hotel had a pool and was really nicely decorated.

You come to Siem Reap mostly because it is close to Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s main attraction. We decided to buy a one day ticket to the Angkor Wat area. Angor Wat and the other temples are situated 10 kms from Siem Reap and the ticket office is outside the city on the way there. It is in a huge building and it is very organized. We got our pictures taken and got our tickets, 37 USD per person. Read More

(Phnom Penh, Cambodia, 13-15th of February)

The flight to Phnom Penh in Cambodia took 45 minutes (it is all about starting and landing) as it is only around 145 km away from Saigon. If we had a bit more time in our schedule we would have gone by bus.

Phnom Penh is another of these big noisy cities but at least the inhabitants seem to follow the  simplest traffic rules, almost all the time…

One night out dining we had a Cambodian speciality, Tarantulas, nice, crispy but hairy…

Ho Chi Minh

(Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, 10-13th of February)

From the lovely little town of Hoi An we were off to another big city, even bigger than the capital city Hanoi. It was a bit of a shock, especially as the traffic in Ho Chi Minh is totally crazy, even worse than in Hanoi. In Vietnam they do not follow normal traffic rules, not even when it comes to traffic lights. You never know if you are safe crossing a street, also if the light is green, as cars and motorbikes very often drive also if they are supposed to wait for their turn. And a car or a motorbike would never stop for you at a pedestrian crossing. The best thing to do is to walk slowly across the street but always with the eye on the traffic – this works as the traffic moves rather slowly.

Ho Chi Minh, or Saigon as most people say, is a big, bustling, but not very charming city. Except for a visit to the Saigon skyview, a really tall building right opposite our hotel,  we spent most of our time on tours visiting places outside the town.        Read More

(Hoi An, Vietnam, 8-10th of February)

As we really enjoyed our tour with TNT travel in Hue we decided to also use them for the transport from Hue to Hoi An. They offered a bus tour from Hue to Hoi An with sightseeing along the way. We were going to be picked up at 8 o´clock in the reception and when it was 8.15 a guy from the reception helped us to call the company and were told that our bus was stuck in traffic. But just a few minutes later the guy from the hotel called up on us and said our transport was outside. We were picked up by a small van and then moved to a bigger bus. We got the last seats and the bus departed. Half an hour later the guide on the bus came and told us there had been a mistake and that we were on the wrong bus. We were on the express bus to Hoi an instead of the sightseeing bus we had booked. We were let of the bus and had to wait at the roadside for 45 minutes.  We had been told we were going to be picked up after 15 minutes and had almost given up when our bus finally arrived. Historical Hue

(Hue, Vietnam, 6-8th of February)

We arrived in Hue by plane and checked in to our hotel in a small alley in a touristy part of the town. Hue is famous for it´s old buildings in the Imperial city in the center of town and the Emperor´s graves outside the town. As we just had one whole day in Hue we decided to go on a tour to be able to see everything. Tripadvisor recommended TNT travel and we booked a full day tour with them. We visited a lot of places during the day.

 (Hanoi, Vietnam, 4-6th of February)

It was so nice to be back in Hanoi again, almost like coming home, a lot because the staff at the hotel were so friendly and service minded. We had planned to make a trip on the 6:th up to Sapa in the north of Vietnam but realized that a weather with 3 degrees celsius and rain is not the best to trek in, especially not if you already got a cold (Johan) The nice hotel staff helped us to cancel our trip and then we rebooked our flight down to Hue, a smaller town along the coast.

(Halong Bay , Vietnam, 3-4th of February)

We had booked our trip to Halong Bay through our hotel. We were picked up at the hotel by a minibus and started the four hour long trip down to the coast. We were a group of people from Europe and South America together with a driver and our guide, named Thang. Along the way we stopped at a touristy handicraft shop where we were let off in one end of the shop and picked up in the other one, all to make us shop as much as possible. (However, we used Johans method for shopping, “If you have not decided that you need it before you leave home, then you do not by it”, so we did not buy anything at all :-))

What a touristy place we arrived to. Wven if if it is low season in Vietnam at the moment the pier was filled with tourists and the harbour crowded with hundreds of ships, looking almost the same.

Our ship was not directly at the pier and we had to take a small transport boat to get to our big boat. Read More

Hanoi

(Hanoi, Vietnam, 1-3rd of February 2018)

The flight from Copenhagen to Hanoi was rather tiring. We started our trip by waking up at 4 AM to be able to catch our plane in Copenhagen and after 6 hours stop over in Doha we arrived at 1.30 AM (Swedish time) in Hanoi. It was then 7.30 o´clock in the morning in Vietnam and we really needed to sleep for some hours before doing anything else. Check in time was not until 2 PM but the fantastic staff at the Hanoi Era Hotel gave us a room already at 9.30. We slept until 3 PM and after that we were ready to have a look at the town.
