Cusco
(Cusco, Peru, 21-24th of October 2017)
Whe got back to Lima from Huaraz by bus really early in the morning and from there we got on a flight to Cusco. From Cusco you can easily travel to Machu Picchu and it is also situated in the Sacred Valley were you can find a lot of Inca ruins. We had not planned how to get to Machu Picchu when we got to Peru but after Christels experiences from our hike to Laguna 69 we decided we did not want to do a 5 days long trek so we decided on the other (and only ) available option, to go by train.
Our first days in Cusco we did focus on getting to know the city and book tickets for the train and entrance for Machu Picchu. Cusco is a very touristy town but with a nice city center and you can shop til you drop if you like. For us it is stupid to do a lot of shopping already as we have to carry it with us for another six weeks. We have talked about sending a parcel home but have no idea if it will reach Sweden before Christmas nor if it ever will get there.
We started our stay in Cusco by staying in a hotel high up on a mountain with a great view over town.
The hotel was fine but the walk up from the city was horrible. On of the days we stayed down in the town all day as we did not want to walk the way twice in one day. After two days we moved down to a hotel right at the main square.
The restaurants around the main square are nice with balconies were you can sit and watch people walking by as you have a, compared to other places we have visited, extremely expensive meal…. You can find alleys were they sell handicraft everywhere and Christel did some “minor” shopping.
