Medellin – a place you must visit!
(Medellin, Colombia, 20-24th of September 2017)
Our first impression, when arriving in Medellin with a taxi from the airport, was not that positive. Our hotel was situated along a really busy road and we were a bit overwhelmed by the noise and the smell. When we arrived in our room we could still hear the cars pretty loud but decided to try to be positive, as we had booked the room for three nights because it had a really good rate on Booking.com. And somehow we got used to the noise, we even ended up booking an extra night at the end.
The infrastructure in Medellin is really good. The Metro is clean, fast and cheap and combined with a cable car system. Medellin is built in a valley surrounded with houses climbing along the side of the mountains.
We started our stay in Medellin by taking a walking tour around the city. Our guide was really good and we got a good overview of the city. Fifteen years ago Medellin was the most dangerous city in the world and so many things have changed since then. We got to see places where tourists normally don’t go and we also got to know the best places to visit – as the square where people gather and play music every afternoon.
We saw so many cool things in Medellin. In a part of Medellin called “Comuna 13” they have built electric escalators upp the hill. This has changed that part of the town a lot as the roads up to Comuna 13 earlier was so steep the cars could not drive there. It has transferred from being a really bad area to become part of the rest of the town and a popular tourist area. We saw a lot of cool graffiti along the walls in Comuna 13.
One day we went on a trip outside town to visit Guatape, a beautiful and colourful town, and El Penon, a cool hill with a lot of stairs to climb.
