Pretty houses and cool restaurants in Cartagena
(Cartagena, Colombia,16-18th of September 2017)
We arrived in Cartagena after a 20 hour long trip from Sweden and got out off the taxi in a small street with houses painted in a lot of different colours. The hotel we had booked was nice and clean also if our room was a bit dark as it only had a window facing the interior of the hotel.
.
Most of the time in Cartagena we spent walking up and down the streets enjoying the old buildings and the colourful houses. The part of Cartagena we stayed in, and spent most of our time in, is called “the historical town” and is surrounded by a high stone wall. Outside the walls Cartagena looks more like any city, a bit less charming.
One day we walked to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a fortress built to protect Cartagena. It was a hot day, around 30 degrees celsius and we were both sweaty and thirsty when we reached the top of the hill where the fortress was built. We enjoyed some lemonade and then we walked around and explored the fortress and its interesting tunnels and great views.
On the way back to the hotel we stopped by a church as we heard people singing and we could not resist to enter to sit down and watch the mass. We were greeted by the people in the church as their friends and invited to join some kind of kids theatre show. People of Colombia are really friendly and nice!
Another thing with Cartagena we really appreciated were the many restaurants we visited – some of them decorated in a really cool way.
