Crazy busdrivers all over this country!
(Christchurch, New Zealand, 1st of February 2017)
Our bus to Christchurch left Picton 7.30 in the morning and because we needed time to pack the bikes when we arrived at the bus station, it was a very early morning.
As usual when traveling in New Zealand, one’s a little scared. The driver drove like a madman and I dared barely look forward. The scenery that flew past the window was beautiful although I did not (of the little I saw) think it was a bigger experience than the views on the North Island.
It was a shame we were not able to ride our bikes at all in the South Island, but when one of the two roads through the northern part of the South Island was destroyed during the earthquake last November (2016), it would have been more or less dangerous to transport by bicycle because all traffic now uses an older narrow road for transport to Christchurch from Picton.
In the middle of the day it was like a regular lunch break and we ate our sandwiches while the rain just kept pouring down.
In New Zealand, buses often change drivers for the same route in the middle of the trip, often when there is lunch break. A smart system that allows bus drivers to always return to their hometown every night.
We arrived in Christchurch late afternoon and checked into our apartment – a very nice but compact apartment with balcony, toilet and kitchen at about 15 sqm.
