Bushland – here we come!
(The Ghost Town, New Zealand, 21st of January 2017)
We left the hotel really early this morning, it was just 07.15 o´clock when we sat on our bikes. The reason for this was that we heard that there would be many cars this day on our way to Whangamomona, located along The Forgotten World Highway, right after the place where we booked accommodation for the night. Whangamomona is a small town that appeals to be a self-governing republic and who celebrates its national day this date each year.
We met a couple at the motel that warned us that the roads would be full of cars on their way to attend the celebration. However, there was hardly no traffic, and we arrived at Bushville camping in a small town called the Ghost Town at two o´clock in the afternoon. The trip was 75 km, with 1078 altitude meter with almost a 2 kilometer long gravel road – an uneven and rocky experience. It takes a lot of energy when it comes to cycle on a gravel road and especially the last 7 kilometers into Bushville were tough. The campsite we booked a cabin in was really a desert place! We were met by a completely empty camping spot with a patch on the door to the front desk with information regarding where our little hutt was situated and that the key was in the door.
However, in the afternoon there were a few more guests, including a motorcycle couple from Holland and eventually the owners came and greeted us. They had of course been in Whangamomona and participated in the celebration.
