Waitomo – glowworms paradise
(Waitomo, New Zealand, 19th of January 2017)
To save some time we took a bus the 150 kilometers from Rotorua to Waitomo. Waitomo is a little village which really only consists of a few restaurants and hotels and where it’s all about visiting Waitomo caves. We had booked accommodation at Waitomo holiday park where we stayed in a cabin with beds for 7 guests.
However, this does not mean a lot of space, instead very many bunk beds on a small surface. The afternoon we spent going for a very long walk (around 15 kilometers) along a marked trail that was incredibly beautiful.
When it was time for the cave visit later that day, we went along with a guide and a smaller group into the cave. Our guide persuaded one of the participants to test the acoustics in the cave by singing a song and then he quenched the light and sang a maori song. Magically beautiful. We then went on a boat in the dark to watch all the glowworms living in the caves. So awesome! Unfortunately, we did not get to take any photos, but I can confirm that it was a memorable experience.
The evening meal was a pizza from the local pizzeria. We had thought that we would cook some food but the supply was really bad at the small grocery store in the village and it was not a tempting option.
