A mountainous bike ride to Kawakawa bay
(Kawakawa Bay, New Zealand, 8th of January 2017)
We had decided to leave Half Moon Bay today but we had no idea how far we would cycle, we thought we could consider this along the way and book a hotel room when we started to feel tired. After the first days fairly easy workouts we thought we should do a tour of around XNUMX kilometers, with the city of Miranda as a goal, but it turned out, especially for me, to be a bit too optimistic.
The road from Half Moon Bay south east proved to be more hilly than expected and there were no long moments of recovery between the hills. When we came halfway on our way to Miranda we arrived to the coast and Kawakawa bay. It had now started blowing quite a lot and we decided to find somewhere to stay overnight. We found a motel right by the water but as I had found that there were supposed to be a number of hotels near Kawakawa bay we continued to cycle along the coast. Unfortunately, we did not find a single hotel and after a closer look at the map, we realized that there is apparently more than one city called Kawakawa in New Zeeland. However, we got another 8 km biking at our cycling account (almost 5 kilometers this day) before returning to the motel we first visited. We got a super fresh newly renovated room with a kitchen and a sea view.
We relaxed for the rest of the day and enjoyed the luxury. For supper we had fish and chips from the small local store that also served hot food over the counter. Not so healthy but wonderfully good, very much because of the fish’s fine quality.
